Rachel Solomon Says it Like She Sees it
Meet the fashion influencer and marketing wiz who doesn’t shy away from making a bold statement in various forms.
Mincing words is not Rachel Solomon’s style — and I love that about her! In a post on Substack Notes last month, the Miami-based writer and founder of the marketing and branding agency Honor Code Creative said: “It’s not officially holiday season until the belt of my coat has been in the toilet. Let the festivities begin!”
She says what we’re all thinking, delivers it with flair, zero pretension, and in her signature, unabashed humor, and I am here for all of it! Other recent quips that made me LOL included: “‘Last Call’ at 35+ is when your therapist says, ‘and that’s our time for today’” and “This morning I was like ‘I should drink a full glass of water before coffee!’ And then I laughed and laughed while mildly scalding my tongue.”
But when she’s not making me (and everyone else on Substack and Instagram) laugh, she’s providing us with genius styling tips, such as reminding us to “requalify things when they go on sale” because “it’s not an automatic yes just because it was once on your wish list and now it costs less.”
It’s no wonder that her Substack, Hey, Mrs. Solomon, in which she espouses such advice, tips, and tricks, is as wildly popular as it is. Not to mention that she’s a huge supporter of female-owned businesses and designers. Really, she’s a fierce, but supportive and kind human.
To wit: Rachel is quick to give credit where credit is due. When reflecting on her journey towards achieving such stellar style, she recalls reading Lucky Magazine and experimenting with color thanks to Blair Eadie (of Dress Code Violation), as well as the appeal of not dressing for the male gaze from Leandra Medine Cohen (aka Man Repeller).
While she’s a massive reality TV fan (Real Housewives, Mormon Wives, The Baldwins, Vanderpump — you name it!) she’s had more meaningful “aha” moments from watching Tibi Style Classes led by designer Amy Smilovic: “This is where I learned that I could have minimal, but also maximal moments, dressing according to something more integral to me than the mood of a moment and more authentically me than being all one thing.”
In the first of i/Edit’s newly revamped profile series, she answered three important questions that reveal her quest for being comfortable and polished. Be sure to come back next week for this non-traveler’s travel tips.
What is the best splurge you’ve ever made?
Blue Miu Miu pajamas. They always make me feel dressed and like a million bucks. It’s a beautiful shade of blue. Whenever I don’t know what to wear, boom, instant outfit. When I first bought them, I thought, “Am I crazy? Could I not just buy J. Crew pajamas?” I’m glad I did it.
What is an item in your closet that you’ve been surprised by how much you use?
My red Comme des Garçons socks. They’re so random and funny, and they just make an outfit something different. Those and my beige Comme des Garçons cardigan, which I bought on the way out of Dover Street Market as an afterthought, are on me all the time! I call an item like this a Security Blanket. And a brown croc belt with a silver buckle, my dad handed down to me. It makes outfits work, especially with lots of black. It’s just unexpected.
